Google, Wikipedia and China

Three interesting things happened last week. First up, Wikipedia turned 7 years old. Happy Birthday Wikipedia. Wikipedia was and is the world's first open source encyclopedia, and remains one of the top 10 most visited sites in the world. Big things happen slowly. Second though, Google hit 600USD. This, after hitting a high of 747USD last November. Big things happen quickly. Finally, China...

Geocoding a physical address with Yahoo and VB

Code Project has a nice little article on how to use Yahoo Web Services to return the geocoded results of an address lookup. For those who don't know, Yahoo has a full developer network with stacks of articles for a variety of development tools including .NET. Also check out their Developer Centre blog.

Facebook ‘Crush’ virus

Laurel Papworth alerted me to this little nasty. Beware of any Facebook apps claiming to inform you of users that have a crush on you… yeah right, as if you'd fall for anything like that :-)

Is the ECM market ripe for consolidation?

An interesting article from Computerworld on the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) space (of which my employer – Elcom – is a major player). Elcom is an ECM company, and we are always grappling with where to best extend our product. Lately we have seen the value of our systems being the platform for a business to run on. Our customisation tends to be in the building of Line of...

Google to allow searching of scientific data

I continue to be stunned by Google's reach. Whilst I'm not one of the 'be wary of Google having too much power' brigade I can see how incredible their power is becoming (trust is a different matter). Name me an area they aren't tapping into… This latest news is exciting for its sheer geekiness factor. It is suggested they will be making 120 terabytes of data available...

Welcome back to the Craig Bailey link blog for 2008

After a few weeks off from posting my links, I'm back for 2008. (Note: my main blog has been continuing on without a break) Admittedly there were a few gems that came along last week that I just had to note, but for the most part, it's been good to take a break. And, as 'distance makes the heart grow fonder' I'm pleased to be back into my blog reading in full force. FeedDemon...

ELCOM: More on Windows 2008, SQL 2008, VS 2008

Earlier this week I mentioned Elcom had moved everything over to 2008 (that is, our product – Community Manager.NET – is now targeting .NET 3.5 in Visual Studio 2008, and our site is running on Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2008 on the back end). Initial thoughts were that the site was running a bit quicker. Turns out we were wrong. The site is actually running a lot quicker...

TIP: Vista performance tools

I can’t always remember where I learn my favourite tips, but I think this one came from Adam Cogan at a recent .Net User Group meeting. In any case, it is covered via my usual Disclaimer. Here’s how to run a quick performance monitor check on your Vista machine. Go to the orb, and type in perf in the Search box Choose the Reliability and Performance Monitor application. When it opens...

Google.org hands out another $25M

Good to see some more investment by Google in targeting climate change and other environmental initiatives.
